son was home today and we spent a good part of the day with leo.(after going and getting 50 more bales of hay....) it was finally sunny, but 40 mile an hour winds. he let me go right up to him in the field and he walked like a true gentlman....even when my boot got stuck in the mud and his next step would have shattered it.....IF he had taken that step. he didnt, he saw i stopped and he immediately stopped to. good boy...i like and need my feet! i hooked him to my hitching post and son and i got to work lovin' him. he got a full groom and lots of treats. yes he has finally realized cookies are good and no longer spits them back at us! he has also realized that my son is like a very loose slot machine with the cookies and leo is a "WINNER"! he did get a little nervous after a bit and we let him off the post. he just stayed there with us, letting son brush his face. he REALLY likes having his forhead brushed. son is doing good with feeding him and haying him. with the wind here the hay was blowing and son was trying to pick it all up and give it back to him...it was funny. he also took a walk with us earlier on a lead around the property, he did great. he even trotted a bit for hubby on the lead. his saddlepad and bridle came today, along with his new brush and girth and fly mask. his new bit and blanket should be here soon....i am hoping next week to tack him up for his first ride. he is doing great and seems to be adjust to his new friends nicely. kara, my mare, is still sulking.lol i never expected that from her...she is so NOT marish usually. but i think she is realizing he is staying....

This is one terrific story complete with video and pictures. I love this!! Leo/Bert is quickly getting the royal spoil!! Nikko, your son and your husband are such angels to open your pasture to this special boy. He is very lucky indeed!!! The school bus just may drop all the kids at your stop next week. Watch out!!

kara my mare is still being pushy. she knows NOT to try it when i am around....when i am in with leo she will even come right up and nuzzle the other side of me, but i know she is just waiting for me to go. she skulked up behind leo yesterday and all i have to do is put my head low and give he "the look" and she moves away.(she KNOWS who the lead mare is here!) well i was inside and leo wanted a drink and kara kept pushing him away, so hubby, trying to be helpful, went to get the lunge whip i thought i had hidden......he cracked it and gento and kara ran for it but leo stood there by hubby. he said it was like leo knew he was protecting him. thank god leo wasnt scared of it....i told hubby some are crazed by it cause of the carriage days. he didn't know. he said i have the look, all he's got is the whip...lol

Nikko wrote of the eagle landing... well the eagle is waiting on a tree at the end of the road for St Nick! A bald eagle has been perched there of late (as there is a deer carcass in the ditch) and will be the first to spot Mike bringing St Nick home..probably tuesday..

Deborah I am sorry to tell you this, but that wonderful St. Nick did not get cleaned up before he left. You will be getting one dirty horse and I am just sick because he deserves better. I am so sorry.

Don' t worry, Nealia. Elbow grease is my middle name. Riva and Lacey are fairly tidy because they are wearing blankets but Ringer (29 yr old morgan) is wildly hairy. I filled the wheelbarrow with hair today. I told them all, especially the girls that they will have a new boyfriend and need to be gracious and welcome him home. AFter reading some of those rita mae brown and sneaky pie brown books, I always imagine the conversations they have at night in the barn.. Mike thinks Tuesday and JOhn has his manual out to figure out how to send photos with the new digital camera.. WE will probably need help. Mike says he is bringing a 4 horse this time so we won't need to get the town grader to get him out of the ditch this trip . deborah

well it has been a week since leo came home. he has settled in quickly.....so quickly i decided to call my local squirrel to come over and play! lol i figured for his first time, i would stay on the ground with him in case he was nervous....he was a star! she is in love with him! he even trotted 3 times for her....then meandered....then decided he was done and walked backwards to where we were standing! poor squirel, she tried so hard to get him to move foward with no crop....even used her "big girl" voice...he just walked backwards. i know i shouldnt have let him, but it was funny and i also got to see what happens when someone tries pushing him when he's had enough....nothing.
he also got his new blanket today....so spring should be here any hour since i got the blanket!
here are the pics from today...

He looks adorable!!! Sounds like he may need a speed enhancement device (riding crop) LOL. We always have rescues that need squirrels to brush and pamper them, bring her over.

when he easily trotted off and kept it up.....i went "uh-oh". (LOL) we got him to be a meanderer.....then when he realized, "hey, wait a minute....i am the slow one....." all was right in the world.
nealia, pat, and anne...thank you from my whole family. my mother who just lost my dad on march first was here and she was never an animal person...would scream if a dog licked her...lol helped feed and hay leo everyday. she would pet him, and watch him from the window all the time. he and my other two made her laugh (like when leo had enough of kara and he slowly backed up one step at a time while she was laying down and took a dump right on her!). she mentioned maybe trying a lead line ride next time she comes. my hubby is also excited to try him out...i want to wait to get some more weight on leo first. lol anyway....your treasure is loved and we owe you a lot!

well we had spa day here. leo got his pedicure! farrier pulled his shoes and did a major trim. she guessed almost a year since he was last trimmed. he was an absolute angel for her. wherever she stood, he picked that foot right up without being cued! no leaning and no refusals. she is in love and wants me to adopt more!! (i wish i had the room...like the rest of you i would have a collection!)lol she works with a lot of rescue horses and even though she said he was way overgrown....he wasnt to bad. i have to watch for a few things but with our soft ground he is doing great. she warned he may be sore for a bit but he has been out there running with the others and whooping it up! i havent noticed any soreness yet. it is funny, when he steps its almost like 2inches before his hoof hits the ground he thinks it should! hubby even took him for a walk, this was before his trim...this is my non-horsey hubby.....

i think hubby is hooked.
so the shoes are off...no major infections(some yuck but it all got trimmed away), he, so far, isnt sore, and he will get looked at again in three weeks. if the weather holds, hopefully he will go for a short ride with son this weekend.

Nikko---I love the pic of your hubby walking Leo! I've finally accepted the fact that mine is never gonna wake up some morning and say,'hey honey, it sure would be a nice day for a ride!'---sigh. But at least he likes the horses (from the ground) and is very good with them... Tell yours he looks like a real pro!
