Spencer is now feeling a little better in his new home.Initially he seemed tired anxious and did not want to eat after the 12 hr trailer ride.I was getting really worried, today I brushed him well and took him out for a long walk (in hand )on the trail and he really seemed to like it.I think he is good thinker horse that should do well with proper love and attention. He seems to be still unsure of me,but his eyes constantly follow me wherever I go so that might be a good sign

It can take some time for them to "unlock". Give it a good thirty days. It takes time but take heart they do come back out of their shells eventually. that love and attention you mentioned will win!

Today I had a trainer come out and do an evaluation ride on him.She was surprised that a saddlebred could be so calm and relaxed !he seems unphased by farm equipment cars, airplanes, pretty much a lot .I am praying he stays the same ,but he has already starting to look good after the food he ate at the rescue .He is a nice quiet ride.I guess he would be a good ambassador soon for the breed.!

Congratulations Lilly! I am so glad things are working out with Spencer. It took awhile for Angelina to come out of her shell and I'm still trying to find treats that she will actually take out of my hand. She will eat them from the bucket but not often from my hand. Mona is right, that love and attention will win him over. Please keep us updated on everything and pictures are great too. I am sure you will be proud of the horse he becomes with some groceries!

I think Spencer will be a wonderful horse for you. He is a little shy but very sweet and knows what he is doing under saddle. Once you get him fattened up he is going to be a beautiful horse.

The whole barn thinks he is very good looking even now.can't wait for him to fatten up

PS: Any pointers on getting him to canter? He is amish trained so he does a beautiful trot but my trainer was not able to canter him.

Use the Amish whack start. He has been Amish for a while but I believe he was started in a show barn. The canter will come back to him with time and work. We were able to get him to canter but needed the whack start. His canter was not bad once he got it.

Hey AnneB, since so many of the horses have cantering issues maybe you could start a thread under Anne's Treasured Thoughts about what you do on a daily basis to help with this. How do you help them re-learn the cues? I think some information on how SBR does this would help a lot of us!

Tara thats a fantastic idea. I agree, its probably the single biggest across the board issue I think we have.

My trainer was able to get him canter today for a few steps with a lot of pushing. He is a tad bit on the lazy side which I actually like as a beginner myself trying to stay safe :)I think with a whip he should do better.I was able to post his trot very well.He is just the perfect beginner horse I can't thank you enough for him

I think the whip is the key to getting him to canter at this stage. I wouldn't even try without it, you will exhaust yourself.

I actually need a whip just to make him trot at times too.He is a tad bit lazy but that's fine with me.

It will probably take a bit before he gets more energy. I believe it took a good year+ before my young thin horse got some weight and spunk. Give him time and see what you get. Good luck.

Lily... My mare also is pretty sure she is not supposed to canter.
I don't know if you are riding outside, but for Rosie, she was much more inclined on the trail. Less inhibiting and simply fun for her. It was more like a hand gallop and she needs much work on collection, but she enjoyed it. The ques come with repetition and much reward when they "get it". Good luck with Spencer, he is lucky to have you!

Spencer is a funny horse. In the ring he is completely laid back and requires urging to make him trot.Outside he is a bit "looky" and looks at everything. He paws the ground when you move away from him even for a minute !
.My non horsey husband has fallen in love with him
